Success

My wonderful news is that my only child has received a Congressional appointment to one of the military academies! Have to wait to see what happens with applications but I am so happy for him to have gotten this far with it. He has worked so hard and wants this so much.

Does anybody have any information on becoming a pilot via the Air Force Academy and marginal color-blindness? With irony worthy of great literature, Timothy's only physical flaw is a bit of color-blindness and he had his heart set on becoming a pilot. I have heard that he cannot do it, but today my dentist told me that his nephew, although he could not have become a pilot via the Navy, did become a pilot via the Air Force Academy even though he has a bit of color-blindness.

Two of my three sons are color blind. Neither of them want to be a pilot so I don't have any answers for you.

But, huge congrats to your son. It is an honor to attend one of the academies.

Congratulations to your son and the rest of your family. How wonderfully proud you must be of him. I sure hope he gets his wish to be a pilot. My son always wanted to be an astronaut - when he grew to 6'7" that was the end of that dream.

Congratulations! I know what an honor a congressional appointment to the Academy is. My son is hoping for an appointment to the Naval Academy next year. He currently is in NJROTC and getting A's in all of his classes. I know the Navy will not accept color blindness but I do not know about the Air Force.

Way to go! Looks like your son will make a fine officer. Maybe your son should look into being a flight test engineer...he would get to ride in the backseat. My husband did this in the AF. It was a fine position and after retirement he has a civilian job in the same field. Good luck!!!

Congratulations to your son!! It is an honor and an achievement! My third son received a nomination from a senator last year and is now at West Point Prep. It has been an incredible challenge, but one that he was/is determined to succeed at. I hope that he can get some answers to his pilot questions. Isn't the whole process amazing?

hi- i am a usafa mom, graduating class of 2003- its funny, your eyes must be perfect for pilot training. if you need glasses a week later, no problem once your in.

what i did was go to an opthalmologist for a complete eye exam for my son because the USAFA
exam was directed to be done at a Binyon's type store. It showed some things in my son's eyes I had never heard of previously.
So we went to an real eye doc- he actually wrote results of the exam and a 3 page letter verifying the explempary state of my son's eyes.
my advice- get the best assessment you can by someone you trust.
congrats! its very tough- if he goes send mail, pkgs, support support support! but if you have that appointment the application should be accepted. also if he applied elsewhere, expect many many other offers!
