Monday Morning

If you are a transplanted Northerner to a climate in which you cannot have the old-fashioned lilacs and if you miss them like you miss oxygen, then this is what you do, you plant varieties that are supposed to make it in the South and you hope for the best. I have lost two lilacs that just disappeared but this one has lots of fragrant blooms this year. Absolute heaven to drink in that fragrance.

I am surprised and delighted to have been tagged by at least 3 other quilt-bloggers, Elke thank you Elke!, that clever cat Triller ,(and don't forget Chelsea!, and Lucy, who is in Paducah. I thank you all and please please forgive me if I have skipped somebody, I was not able to catch up on blogs this week-end as I had hoped.

Very quickly before I leave late for work (!), here is Corny Quilt Top with its borders and backing makings:

I inserted little drawings at top and bottom. At top is a crow saying greedily "almost ripe" and at bottom a Holmes County circa 1932 lady is saying "corn is king". Here are the makings for the backing:

Oh argh I'm definitely late now. Talk to you all later!

Oh, lilacs! We can't grow them here, either, and I yearn for them too.

My mom loved lilacs - I was so sad when I returned to her former home last year to discover that hers was no longer there. I don't think they would grow in my neck of the woods. Love the corn quilt - the drawings are inspired.

Loving this corny quilt!!! My lilacs took it on the chin when we had our freeze a coupla weeks back. I will miss the fragrant blossoms. I have two purple and one white bush. Hope the bushes themselves survive!

Lilacs are my favorite! Their fragrance is like no other and it transports me back to younger days.
I'm glad one of your trees survived and is thriving. :-)
Your corny quilt top is cute.
T & C send their love.

Oh, I love lilacs, too. I was afraid mine would bloom while we were on vacation last week, but they're ready to be cut and brought inside today!

The borders are imaginative and the backing is going to be interesting too. It's nice to let a piece evolve and tell you where it wants to go.

I have a lilac in my garden too and I chose on purpose a heavy scented one so that when in bloom (now) I can go in the garden in the evening and enjoy (ups the lilac is in bloom, not me!). Your corn quilt is ever so nice. I like the idea of the drawings in the border. Take care.

Lilac scent instantly puts me back in time.
Please show us the corn back when you put it together.

Hi Karen,
I was just skimming back through your blog for a hooked rug pic that I thought I remembered (yes, I found it!)
I wanted to say how delightful all your photos are -- your artistic style is so strongly defined. Both the projects you do yourself, and the quilts and oher items you encounter and share with us are always charming and folk-arty :)
Thanks for your ongoing inspiration!

I love the smell of lilacs, mine are in bloom right now. I like to bring them in the house to enjoy the smell even more.

I live in 'corn country' and your quilt caught my eye. In fact there's a corn field behind my back yard. Maybe a corn quilt is in my future? The way you did the back is so clever! Love it!

The corn quilt is great! Like connie, I live in corn country and will have to make something like this. There are plenty of soybeans around here, too -- know of any designs for those?!?!
